Brazilian cases for pupils’ performance improvement based on innovation Speaker: Luciano Meira, Professor & Entrepreneur, Federal University of Pernambuco & Proz Education Research in various fields of the Learning Sciences has long revealed the metaphors that sustain classical views of school learning, such as the idea of 'knowledge transmission' as if it were electromagnetic waves, instead of treating knowledge as a matter of appropriation through co-participation in communities of learners. There are plenty of examples on how to implement the latter vision and emphasize students' agency through active methodologies in individual classrooms. But, how to accomplish that in scale, impacting millions of students in developing countries like Brazil? This session presents the strategy implemented by three Brazilian States, themselves responsible for several thousand schools and teachers, to radically change pupils' performance and results in national tests.
