3rd Bett Recife Conference: What Can We Learn from Education in Pernambuco?
Bett Brasil's traveling event will take place in Recife on October 5 and 6
In May, Bett Brasil brought together Brazilian and international educators and experts in São Paulo to engage in a broad discussion on “Co-creating the Education of the Future” and to shed light on the new learning technologies being incorporated into classrooms across the country. Considered the largest education and technology gathering in Latin America, Bett Brasil is now heading to Recife (PE), where it will host the traveling event “3rd Bett Conference” on October 5 and 6 at the Recife Event Center.
The conference will feature more than 15 hours of content, eight panel discussions, and the participation of leading professionals in the Brazilian education sector. The choice of Pernambuco’s capital was no accident. In addition to being home to one of Brazil’s best private school systems, the state was among the top performers in the 2021 Ideb (Basic Education Development Index).
Internal research by Bett Brasil indicated that the Northeast region should host a traveling event, and among the state capitals, Recife was chosen as the city to discuss issues specific to Brazilian private education, largely based on official Ideb data and the state’s own education system.
In Pernambuco, more than 500,000 students are enrolled in private basic education (22.6%), compared to 77.4% in the public school system, across 2,272 private schools. On average, the Ideb score for elementary school (early grades) is 5.5, with 6.5 in private schools and 5.1 in public schools; for upper elementary school (later grades), the average is 4.8, with 6.0 in private schools, 4.5 in municipal public schools, and 4.7 in state public schools. In high school as well, the private sector’s scores are notably higher: 5.9 compared to 4.4 in state schools. Another important statistic for Pernambuco is that of the 86,285 teachers, 77% hold a college degree.
“Education in the Northeast is one of the sectors that has evolved the most in recent years, thanks to consistent and ongoing efforts in both the public and private education systems. That is why it is important for Bett Brasil to expand beyond the Rio-São Paulo corridor and bring the expertise of its events to this region, promoting dialogue about the future of education and highlighting the successful projects of local school systems,” says Adriana Martinelli, Director of Content at Bett Brasil.
What Will the Bett Conference in Recife Be Like?
On the first day, the Bett Conference will feature an official opening ceremony led by two renowned educators from the Pernambuco education scene: José Ricardo Dias Diniz, president of the Union of Educational Institutions in the State of Pernambuco (SINEPE/PE), and Professor Luciano Meira, who serves as an adjunct professor of psychology at the Federal University of Pernambuco, is a contributing professor at CESAR School (Center for Advanced Studies and Systems in Recife), and is a founding partner of Joy Street, a company specializing in playful educational technologies.
Regarding education in the state of Pernambuco, Diniz cites as examples of successful practices the development of full-time schooling as a public policy—starting with high school—and the adoption of a curriculum aligned with the “New High School” initiative, based on flexibility and an emphasis on students’ life plans. “This highlights how innovation and youth leadership must converge to create new opportunities for entering the workforce, in this context of rapid technological advancement,” states the president of SINEPE.
For Meira, the region has a natural aptitude for innovation; one example of this is the Porto Digital Technology Park, an initiative coordinated by the government, academia, and businesses, which has partnerships with higher education institutions. “Porto Digital is Brazil’s first walkable technology park in the historic city center—an opportunity for serendipity, that is, to find partners among the more than 50 startups and companies and the 12,000 people who work there.”
In this regard, Carla Alexandre, the Educational Projects Coordinator at CESAR School and one of the guest speakers at the Bett Conference, points out that Pernambuco stands out on the national stage in youth education, with more than 50 technical schools. She points out that studying the local ecosystem was essential to identifying the high demand for professionals in the field of Information Technology (IT) in the state, and this is reflected in the curricula of technical programs. “We have leading schools such as NAVE Cícero Dias and ETE Porto Digital, which have combined high school education with technical training in the field of IT and entrepreneurship, for example,” says Carla.
Innovative Management
The central theme of the Bett Conference will be “School Management and Innovation in Learning: How to Tackle the Challenges?” The goal is to foster a meaningful dialogue about the challenges faced by educational administrators and leaders and how innovation can be brought to their schools.
The president of SINEPE believes that a culture of innovation in schools should bring “hands-on” experience and collaboration to learning environments, with teachers serving as facilitators of activities that promote knowledge in a critical, creative, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary manner.
“There is no longer room for a centralized and authoritarian management style. The greater the flow of information and the exchange of experiences among members of the management team, the greater the consistency and shared responsibility for the decisions made. All of this must be supported by data, processes, established goals, and results, with the participation of everyone involved in management,” emphasizes Diniz.
The Bett Conference will also combine educational content with practices implemented by civil society organizations and companies in the education sector. This is the case with Systemic Bilingual, which provides in-depth training and support. “Northeastern Brazil is home to countless high-quality schools today. As in other regions of the country, one of the major challenges is securing qualified professionals, and it is in this regard that we will present our work—focused on teacher development—and help alleviate some of the existing challenges,” explains Vanessa Tenório, director and co-founder of Systemic, who is also a speaker at the Bett Conference.
Building on the same premise of collaboration with teachers, Acedriana Vicente Vogel, educational director of the Positivo Education System, explains the importance of the event in Pernambuco from the perspective of someone with expertise in the region—with more than 340 partner schools in the Northeast, 64 of which have been in operation for over 20 years and five for over 30 years. “This region has always inspired Brazilian education with works revered worldwide, such as those of Paulo Freire. The student-centered approach, which today stands as one of the pillars of the new high school curriculum, was already the philosophy advocated by Paulo Freire in *Pedagogy of Autonomy*.”
