The brain is the part of the human body that remains a mystery to scientists in many ways. In this regard, new research and studies emerge every day that aim to uncover yet another piece of this mystery—our greatest driver of life. In education, understanding the mechanisms of how students’ brains work is also a key factor. 

In the first episode of March, Conexão Bett features Adriana Fóz, a neuropsychologist specializing in emotional education and director of NeuroConecte, for a conversation about how understanding how the brain works can help educators in the process of teaching their students, as well as foster their social-emotional development.

Adriana began the chat with a simple analogy about the relationship between neuroscience and education. “To use a smartphone well, it’s important that we understand a little bit about how it works; otherwise, the device will just be a useless object,” she joked. Adriana explains that it’s important to understand the brain’s learning mechanisms—especially those based on scientific evidence—to debunk and clarify many of the “neuromyths” circulating in society.

“You have no idea how much we’ve already learned and how much we still rely on knowledge based on misinformation that has nothing to do with how the brain learns,” said the neuropsychologist.

She emphasized that educational neuroscience helps us “do more with less.” “For example, students have a limited attention span, so if a teacher wears themselves out trying to keep them focused at the same peak level of concentration for an hour and a half, they’ll end up frustrated. Understanding these learning mechanisms will help teachers, especially because learning also involves emotional aspects. Who can learn effectively if they’re depressed, discouraged, or distracted? Therefore, understanding both the mechanisms of learning and the factors that promote learning are very important for teachers and will greatly ease their burden in educating students,” said Adriana. 

Inspirational Talk

Adriana is one of the guest speakers at the inspirational talks that will take place at the 2024 Bett Brasil Conference. Under the theme “The Extraordinary Learning Brain,” the neuropsychologist plans to explore the extraordinary world of the brain in learning.

“I’m going to talk about emotional plasticity and some of the factors that are essential for us to optimize this great capacity of ours, especially by always taking care of both our mental health and our social-emotional skills. I hope that Bett Brasil will be a great celebration of our ability to learn,” she concluded.
