"Purple August" and the Cognitive Delta: How much of a student's potential does the school actually tap into?
With regard to High Abilities/Giftedness, I propose a simple equation: Cognitive Delta = demonstrable cognitive ability − cognitive demand. Delta means difference or variation; therefore, Cognitive Delta represents the gap between what the student demonstrates the ability to do and what the environment actually requires.
This difference can help shed light on a situation that often goes unnoticed in schools: students who achieve good results but spend much of their time working at a level below what they are capable of handling.
1. When Capacity and Demand Don't Align
In AH/SD, this gap can be particularly significant. A student may quickly grasp the material, complete the activities, and earn excellent grades without encountering challenges commensurate with their potential. In this case, increasing the quantity of exercises does not solve the problem: we need to increase the quality of the demands by incorporating more relationships, abstraction, inquiry, creativity, uncertainty, and knowledge transfer.
The Cognitive Delta allows us to focus precisely on this range. It does not measure intelligence or identify giftedness; it helps us observe whether the environment is successfully bringing out what the student demonstrates they are capable of doing.
2. High skills cannot lead to another exclusion
“Purple August” also makes it possible to discuss talent without dividing the school between those who “have it ” and those who “don’t.” AH/SD has its own criteria and specific educational needs, but all students have interests, experiences, and areas in which they can demonstrate skills that need to find a space to develop.
Thinking about cognitive demands means looking for these possibilities. The same sensitivity needed to recognize a student with ASD can help the school identify abilities that remain hidden because they have never encountered a situation in which they could emerge.
3. Interest also generates demand
Personal tastes and interests can serve as natural starting points for further exploration. A student interested in video games may explore probability, programming, and systems theory; soccer can lead to statistics, physics, and geography; and dinosaurs can lead to evolution, geology, and climatology.
We don't need to limit our knowledge to the student's initial interests. We can use it to gradually increase the level of complexity and explore topics the student is not yet familiar with.
- "Interest" creates an entry;
- Challenge fuels exploitation;
- Connections broaden our knowledge;
- New demands drive capacity forward.
4. Self-awareness: recognizing one’s own Cognitive Delta
There is also a process of self-discovery. Students can recognize when something truly challenges them, when they are merely repeating what they have already mastered, which topics spark their curiosity, where they find things easy, and where they need to develop new strategies.
This self-awareness increases their active participation in their own learning. For students with AH/SD, it can even mean learning to deliberately seek out new levels of complexity rather than simply staying within the comfort zone where everything is already easy.

5. A Cognitive Compass
We can represent the Cognitive Delta on a Cartesian matrix by plotting demonstrable cognitive ability against cognitive demand. This reveals regions of underchallenge, productive challenge, low stimulation, and overload. The point is not to classify the student into a specific quadrant, but to observe where they are in a given context and what experiences might shift their position.
For “Purple August,” this compass raises a very concrete question: How many highly capable or gifted students spend years proving that they can meet all our expectations without the school realizing just how far they could go?
Perhaps part of our work lies precisely in this area. Identifying AH/SD is essential; once identified, we need to create opportunities, interests, challenges, and levels of complexity capable of transforming potential into development. The Cognitive Delta is a proposal designed to contribute to this topic and make this gap visible.
Note on the Cognitive Compass — Cognitive Delta
The Cognitive Compass presented in this text is a conceptual model designed to foster reflection and educational discussion. It is not a psychometric instrument, test, diagnosis, classification, or method for identifying High Abilities/Giftedness (HA/G), nor does it intend to categorize students into fixed profiles or quadrants.
Its four quadrants visually represent possible relationships between two axes—demonstrable cognitive ability and the cognitive demands presented—taking into account positive and negative differences between these dimensions. The positions are contextual and dynamic, and may vary depending on the student’s field of knowledge, experience, interests, task, and current situation.
The Cognitive Delta should therefore be understood as a visual and conceptual tool for thinking about the relationship between ability and demand, and not as a measure of a person’s intelligence or ability.
