Recent violent attacks at Brazilian schools have been a cause for concern among educators, students, and families. From 2002 to 2023, at least 22 attacks involving extreme violence were recorded at educational institutions across the country. Ten of them occurred between May 2022 and March 2023. The data comes from the study “Attacks of Extreme Violence in Schools in Brazil, ” conducted by the Institute for Advanced Studies (IdEA) at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp).

In an interview with Conexão Bett, Cléo Garcia—a master’s student in education at Unicamp and one of the researchers responsible for the study—explains the reasons behind the recent increase in cases, the profiles and motivations of the perpetrators, and ways for schools to prevent these attacks, among other topics.
