Artificial intelligence (AI) was already a recurring topic in discussions about educational technologies, but this year it has gained even more prominence since the popularization of the ChatGPT. One of the biggest fears is whether technology will affect the role of teachers and schools themselves.

During Bett UK, many speakers addressed the topic, and despite the debates, there was a consensus that, whether we like it or not, this technology is here to stay. AI research may be put on hold for a while, but not permanently.

The challenge, therefore, is to make good use of AI. This is something humans still need to learn, according to Paul Leblanc, president of Southern New Hampshire University in the United States. He mentioned during his panel discussion that 35% of Stanford students already use ChatGPT to complete their assignments. “We’re a little lost, but I believe everyone should use it: our marketing staff, our instructional designers, and our students. What I’ve been doing is asking students: ‘How do you use it?’” said Leblanc.

For elementary school students, one approach should be to teach them how Artificial Intelligence works. Among the exhibitors are companies such as the Polish startup Photon, which offers a solution in which children must train a robot’s “intelligence” so that it can perform certain tasks.

In addition to AI, exhibitors at Bett UK are offering a variety of options for the positive use of technology. Google is showcasing “Practice Sets” at Bett UK, an online tool that helps teachers create lists of exercises and tests by suggesting questions and answers and allowing for intuitive editing. The idea is to save teachers time. The new tool is expected to be available soon to everyone who already uses Google for Education products .

Another tech giant, Microsoft, showcased Reading Coach, its tool for improving reading and public speaking skills, which can provide real-time feedback to each student. Once again, by streamlining certain classroom processes, it frees up the teacher’s time so they can devote themselves to their students in a more personalized way.

Bett UK 2023 will run through this Friday (the 31st) and brings together educators and global technology companies, renowned educational brands, and startups that provide solutions for all educational scenarios, challenges, and sectors.
