On Thursday (the 15th), the Center for Innovation in Brazilian Education (CIEB) held an online launch event for the 2022 Edutec Guide Report, which provides an overview of the level of technology adoption in Brazilian public education. The goal is to guide administrators in developing innovation plans for school systems within the framework of a connected school. 

The survey, which covered approximately 104,000 schools—equivalent to 75% of the country’s schools—showed that 81% of school administrators view the use of digital technologies as a positive factor in improving educational quality and equity, as well as in advancing teaching and learning processes. 

However, 46% of respondents stated that there are no programs or projects in place at educational institutions to promote the integration of technology into teaching practices. With regard to internet access, only 47% of respondents reported that internet connectivity is available throughout the school campus. 

“The data show that if we do not make significant investments, infrastructure will continue to be the bottleneck of a National Educational Technology Policy. After all, it is an enabling condition for schools to develop digital skills among both teachers and students,” said Lucia Dellagnelo, CEO of CIEB.

According to Dellagnelo, the country has made progress in incorporating technology-related topics into the curriculum and teacher training, but more needs to be done: “If we don’t invest in connectivity and equipment to enable the use of technology, we won’t move forward fast enough to transform education in Brazil,” he added.

The event was also attended by Mauro Luiz Rabelo, Secretary of Basic Education at the Ministry of Education (MEC), as well as Carolina Miotto, Executive Manager at CIEB; Maúna Rocha, Manager of Educational Innovations and Technologies at CIEB; and CIEB’s education and technology specialists, Júlia Borges, Larissa Rosa, and Raquel Costa.
