The new episode of Conexão Bett discusses building relationships between teachers and students in the classroom with Professor Júlio Furtado, an educator, writer, and holder of a master’s and a doctorate in education. The program is an initiative of Bett Brasil, the organizer of the largest event on innovation and technology in education in Latin America.

Júlio Furtado points out that the premise underlying teacher-student relationships in the formation of emotional bonds must take into account processes that result from interpersonal relationships, based on effective and successful classroom engagement—whether in person or online—as the starting point for a collaborative, collective effort.

“We need an environment of trust, empathy, and mutual respect that fosters students’ learning and social-emotional development. In fact, both teachers and students must be willing to build this caring relationship. It is up to the teacher to create an environment where students feel safe, where everyone respects one another, and where there is empathy and clear boundaries—all of which are essential to making this relationship both caring and productive.”

The expert also emphasizes the importance of teachers building relationships with their students both collectively (in groups or as a class) and individually, by understanding and observing the profile of each student or group in the classroom. “There is no formula for building and fostering relationships. Whether working with students individually or with the entire group, teachers need to have ‘intuition’ and sensitivity. It’s a person-to-person relationship that varies and changes for each individual, each class, and even each school environment,” notes Furtado.

Online Romantic Relationships

During the pandemic, schools, educational institutions, and teachers faced challenges on many fronts, particularly in forming emotional bonds. “Technology served as a means of bringing us closer together during a time of physical distancing, but it also left gaps in our online relationships. We had to relearn how to relate and interact outside the physical confines of the school,” says Furtado, explaining the phenomenon that allowed students to keep their cameras off.

The teacher points out that building strong, healthy bonds between students and teachers does not happen overnight, but rather through an ongoing process that requires effort, patience, and dedication.

Furtado also adds that emotional bonds between teachers and students are essential and can have a significant impact on educational success and well-being. Although there is no set formula for this, he lists some important aspects for building this relationship.

“Of course, teachers need to focus on their instructional and pedagogical skills, but they must also focus on their interpersonal skills in order to lay the groundwork for getting to know their students, maintaining open communication, establishing clear rules, recognizing students’ efforts and achievements, being physically and emotionally present, fostering students’ autonomy, and creating opportunities for reflection that foster an environment conducive to critical thinking.”
