In a new episode of Conexão Bett, Instructure’s vice president of global strategy, Ryan Lufkin, explained the trends that are transforming education, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and micro-certifications. He discussed how we need to move past the initial perception that ChatGPT’s open AI is used for cheating and shift our focus to assessing learning based on three main pillars: efficiency, teacher effectiveness, and student success.

The executive pointed out that we are already seeing a more advanced approach to AI, aimed at saving teachers time and allowing them to focus fully on the classroom. And for students, it helps with homework through an AI tutor that can answer their questions immediately. “There’s always the fear that technology will somehow replace educators. We simply don’t see that happening. Educators are the magic. We just believe that AI tools allow them to reach students in a broader and more personalized way,” said the executive.

Regarding micro-certifications—which are shorter learning experiences—Lufkin discussed how they help professionals remain competitive in the job market by improving and updating their skills or even preparing for new career paths. “A few years ago, Google stopped requiring a bachelor’s degree and began accepting certificates in programming and other skills. This is a sign of a shift in the job market: perhaps a full bachelor’s degree is no longer necessary for some positions. You can earn certificates focused on specific skill sets,” he explained.

The expert believes that micro-certifications will lower the barriers to entry into universities and give students greater control over their educational experience and training. This is because, with a program that focuses more on skills and credentials, students do not need to commit to the traditional four-year undergraduate degree, which offers greater flexibility and ensures that, within a period of one or two years, for example, they have already acquired a sufficient set of skills to bring to the job market.
