Inspiring content draws large audiences at Bett UK
Damian Hughes, a teacher and best-selling author, is one of the highlights of the second day of Bett UK; check out how it went

Bett UK features several venues for lectures and panel discussions, spread throughout the pavilion. The largest of these, called the Arena, is an auditorium with a capacity of 1,500 people, which hosts renowned experts and fan favorites over the course of the three days.

Best-selling author Damian Hughes was one of the speakers who drew a packed crowd to the Arena during a presentation on the second day of the event. Hughes demonstrated how certain insights from psychology and neuroscience can be applied in the classroom or in the administration of educational institutions.

The first concept he presented was that of simplicity. “Our brains crave simplicity,” he said. Therefore, in order to keep students focused, teachers should choose to provide less information. He used a metaphor about throwing balls to students. If the teacher throws just one, there’s a good chance the student will be able to catch it. The more balls that are thrown, the greater the risk that several will fall. Therefore, it is the responsibility of teachers and administrators to prioritize, so that each student catches the right ball.

The author also spoke about the importance of storytelling. “Our brains can absorb more information if it’s woven into a story,” he said during the talk. Hughes also argued that anyone can become a good storyteller and offered a five-step framework for creating narratives: simply start your sentences like this:

1. Once upon a time…
2. Every day (something happened)…
3. Until one day…
4. Because of this change…
5. Until… (conclusion).

Speaking to a packed audience, Hughes delivered a practical and useful lecture relevant to everyday education. In addition to Hughes, the Arena hosted talks on artificial intelligence, sustainable education, well-being, STEAM, and other topics.

Bett UK 2023 will run through this Friday (the 31st) and brings together educators and global technology companies, renowned educational brands, and startups that provide solutions for all educational scenarios, challenges, and sectors.
