Understand the importance of using digital culture as a backdrop for school activities throughout K-12 education at a time when digital transformation is impacting every aspect of our lives, as well as our personal and professional relationships.

In addition to the content of traditional subjects, the BNCC establishes skills and competencies that should be developed throughout basic education, one of which is digital literacy.

The Digital Literacy competency states that, in addition to knowledge about how technological tools work, it is necessary to know how to use technology responsibly, ethically, and judiciously.

This issue becomes even more important in light of the digital transformation resulting from the Fourth Industrial Revolution we are currently experiencing.

Digital Culture from the First to the Last Stage of Basic Education

Before addressing critical thinking in the use of a wide variety of digital tools, it is important to first address issues such as:

● The way these tools are designed.

● How it works.

● How to adapt them to a wide variety of situations.

These concepts can be addressed through active learning methods such as:

● Steam;

● Maker Culture;

● PBL;

● Educational Robotics.

The implementation of the Digital Literacy competency should take into account the entire cycle, not just the school year.

This should be done through activities related to each stage of development.

For example:

● Scientific and technological projects presented in a fun way;

● Analyze the information and determine which parts are true and which are fake news;

● Assess the best way to use various sources of information—databases, newspapers, magazines, social media, blogs, and others;

● The positive and negative effects of technology on society;

● How society impacts technology;

● The role of technology in addressing various issues and problems;

● Research, development, and innovation;

● Technologies applied to communication, health, agricultural techniques, etc.

Digital Culture is about the ethical and responsible use of technology

Digital literacy should be integrated into all stages of elementary education—not as a separate subject, but as an underlying framework based on practices that involve projects, scientific and engineering concepts, interdisciplinary approaches, and group work.

These elements will also help young people develop important social-emotional skills so that they leave school ready to apply technology in various aspects of their lives.
