To discuss this scenario, the fourth edition ofJC Educaçãowill host a special event on August 19 titled“Cyberbullying, AI, and Digital Crimes.” The initiative builds on a major partnership withBett Brasil—Latin America’s largest event for innovation and technology in education—and Educa, a leading platform for social-emotional development.

The in-person event will take place at the Graça Araújo Auditorium, at the Jornal do Commercio Communication System, as part of the Bett Nordeste conference program, which will continue at the Recife Expo Center starting in the afternoon of the 19th and on the 20th.

The exponential growth in screen time and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into students’ daily lives serve as a constant warning. For Jaime Ribeiro, CEO of the Educa platform, combating online violence and cyber risks is directly linked to human development. “This event is urgent because, when we talk about digital dangers, we’re also talking about human development. Schools need to help students recognize risks, make choices, and ask for help,” Ribeiro emphasizes.

The Impact of the Felca Law and the Criminalization of Cyberbullying

The debate is taking place at a crucial moment for Brazilian legislation, which has been cracking down on impunity on the internet. Recently, the public has witnessed the passage of key regulatory frameworks, such as the so-called “Felca Law” ( Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents—Law No. 15,211/2025).

The law covers the protection of minors under the age of 18 in virtual environments, establishing verification mechanisms and holding digital platforms and developers directly accountable so that the internet is no longer treated as a space without boundaries.

In addition, the enactment of Law 14.811/2024 officially included bullying and cyberbullying in the Brazilian Penal Code. Under the new rules, systematic online harassment is no longer merely a misdemeanor but has become a crime. Schools, therefore, now bear an even greater responsibility for mediating and preventing these conflicts.

Multidisciplinary panel: education, security, technology, and journalism

To ensure a comprehensive and in-depth approach, JC Educação has assembled a team of guest speakers with diverse perspectives on young people’s digital experiences—bringing together public safety, technology research, and emotional management.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Mirella Araújo, writer forthe JC Educação column. “Despite advances in legislation related to digital crimes, it is essential to discuss ways to prevent and address practices such as cyberbullying, as well as to deepen the debate on the responsible and critical use of tools such as artificial intelligence (AI),” says Mirella.

The lineup of speakers includes:

• Carla Alexandre: PhD in Technology Education and Manager of Educational Solutions at CESAR/Porto Digital.
• Mayara Thais de Castro: federal police officer (DELECIBER/DRPJ/SR/PF/PE) and instructor for the “Guardians of Childhood” Program, developed by the Federal Police’s Cybercrime Directorate.
• Jaime Ribeiro: writer , artificial intelligence expert, and CEO of Educa.

Bett Northeast Conference

Following this morning's JC Educação session, the Bett Nordeste conference program continues starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Recife Expo Center.

Mirella Araújo will moderate the panel discussion “Learning in Action: What Happens When Schools and Families Work Together?” in the Public Education Auditorium; admission is free.

The event will feature Bete Rodrigues, an educational consultant at Disciplina Positiva Brasil Consultoria, and Leonardo Xavier, the bilingual academic coordinator at the Centro de Educação Integrada.

Following that, at 6:30 p.m., the columnist will participate in the Bett Debate, highlighting the key moments of the program that began that morning at the Graça Araújo Auditorium at the SJCC and concluded at the Recife Expo Center.
