The use of data in school management has taken center stage as an essential tool for making educational institutions more efficient, strategic, and student-centered. Experts argue that by transforming scattered information into actionable insights, schools can move away from a reactive approach and begin to anticipate challenges, thereby promoting more effective and personalized interventions.

According to Tayguara Velozo, the Technopedagogical Integration Manager (Colégio GGE and Juntos Educação), many educational institutions still operate reactively, solving problems as they arise and dealing with issues such as failing gradesand school dropout rates at the end of each term.

“Schools are generators of data, which come in through various systems—from the front desk, through administration, marketing, scheduling, and student tracking records, all the way to channels of communication with parents. The challenge begins with integrating so many layers of communication and organizing that data,” says Velozo. For him, cultural change occurs when we move away from a reactive approach and begin to operate in a data-driven manner.

Carina Sucupira, the leader in Data Strategy and Data and Analytics Coordinator at Itaú Unibanco, believes in the power of education to transform lives and says that no student leaves school without a warning. “There are always signs, and the data captured by the systems used in schools are records of those signs,” she says.

She adds: “The reality in Brazil shows us that students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and that the role of institutions is to take an increasingly personalized approach, with a focus on care. To that end, the use of technology and data analysis can help.”

For Carina, in addition to taking a reactive approach, institutions still rely very little on available data reports and much more on the intuition of education professionals. “Integrating, organizing, and interpreting data allows us to identify patterns that give us a better understanding of our educational institution and, from there, implement preventive, corrective, and supportive measures, among others,” she explains.

Velozo also cited some examples. “Schools have systems for monitoring students: attendance, completion of assignments, academic progress, performance, and so on. They also have systems that flag what is known as ‘silent dropout, ’ when a family becomes disengaged and stops participating. ‘This data, once organized and analyzed, allows for actions to be taken to prevent student dropout or grade repetition, not just at the end of the school year, but throughout the entire school year,’ he notes.”

Carina agrees and points out that signs such as a drop in attendance, recurring tardiness, social distancing, lack of engagement, and declining performance—among others—are indicative of issues that the institution needs to address by strengthening its rapport with students and their families, which in turn leads to a level of care that has a positive impact.

“That is the positive potential of the available data. When used effectively, data enables us to provide care proactively and reduces the need for intuitive decisions. Connect, interpret, act, and measure the results: that should be our goal as we move forward by embracing modernity,” he concluded.

The topic was highlighted in one of the panels at the Managers’ Forum, held during Bett Brasil 2026, an event dedicated to strategic reflection and the development of solutions for educational management.
