While introducing Ashcroft Academy to the Brazilian delegation visiting London on Tuesday morning (the 23rd), the school’s vice principal, Phil Hall, explained just how strict the rules are for students in terms of behavior: everyone must wear the full uniform; they cannot be late, miss school, fail to do their homework, forget their supplies, or—of course—be disrespectful to teachers or classmates.

All of this, he says, helps create an environment conducive to learning. Teachers also do their part, always seeking ways to improve in their fields. Administration is responsible for providing training on how to teach and learn. “We don’t tell teachers exactly how to teach each lesson, but we equip them with the tools they need to teach effectively,” Hall said.

He, who is also a math teacher, reported that this year the teaching staff is focusing specifically on studying motivation, but the psychology of learning is a topic that is always covered in group training sessions. “We’ve already studied how the brain works—how information from working memory is transferred to long-term memory. All of this is evidence-based,” Hall noted. And they seek to ensure that this knowledge translates into classroom practices that promote better learning.

Not the entire delegation went to Ashcroft. The group, which has more than 190 members, was divided among other schools during the morning. Some visited Kingsley Academy, a meeting geared toward representatives of the Brazilian government, while others visited St. John XXIII School and Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School.

In the afternoon, there was also an event atKing’s College, a higher education institution, where Professor Arthur Galamba spoke about teacher training in the United Kingdom, and the group discussed hybrid learning.

Although they have had different experiences, the delegation members were able to recognize that the pursuit of a quality education is something that unites Brazilians and Britons. By witnessing different responses and proposals, they expanded their repertoire, which helps them better address local challenges.

“We have problems that we think are specific to our country, but when we travel, we see that some problems are persistent all over the world. During our visits, through the people we meet, we end up experiencing other ways of dealing with problems and glimpsing a better future,” saidRenata Cunha, coordinator of the bilingual program at the Portinari Institute.

Catarina Pontes, executive manager of educational products at CNA, also believes that all the visits were extremely useful. “Since I work in language teaching, understanding the culture is essential. By taking these visits, we gain insight into various cultural aspects. We can draw parallels regarding the regulation of government agencies, how assessments are conducted, and how students are prepared for the job market. All of this has a direct impact on what we produce,” Catarina emphasized.

The group’s schedule will span the entire week, with more technical visits, in addition, of course, to their participation in Bett UK. The Brazilian delegation is supported by Edlatam Alliance and Systemic Bilingual, in partnership with the British Consulate General, Google for Education, and Samsung.
