The average score on the 2024 National High School Exam (Enem) was 546 points, three points higher than the previous year. The data was released by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Anísio Teixeira National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (Inep) on Monday (the 13th).

“The Enem plays a very significant role in the lives of Brazilian students, as it is the main gateway to higher education,” noted Education Minister Camilo Santana. “We want to continue expanding access to the exam and encourage more students to take it. Compared to the 2023 Enem, we can see an increase in the number of students who took the exam, a decrease in the number of absentees, and an increase of 400,000 registrations for the 2024 edition,” he said.

Results by field of study

The 2024 Enem recorded 4,325,960 million registrations, with a participation rate of 73.5%, which represented an increase compared to 2023, when the rate was 71.9%.

In the results by subject area, “Languages, Codes, and Their Technologies” and “Writing” showed an increase in average proficiency compared to 2023—from 516 points in 2023 to 528 points in 2024, and from 645 points to 660 points, respectively.

In the other subject areas, however, average proficiency scores declined. In Mathematics and Its Technologies, the score fell from 535 points to 529 points, and in Humanities and Their Technologies, it dropped from 522 points to 517 points. In Natural Sciences and Their Technologies, the average score decreased from 497 points to 495 points.

On the 2024 ENEM, 12 students achieved a perfect score on the essay section (1,000 points); one of them attended a public school in Minas Gerais, and the others attended private schools located in the states of Alagoas, Ceará, the Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, and São Paulo.

Unified Admissions System (Sisu)

Data from the 2024 edition revealed that more than 33% of Enem participants (1,080,096) would have scored above the cutoff for 20% of the programs in the Unified Selection System (Sisu) in 2023. This means that with 569.62 points (the cutoff score), a student would have access to 842 programs. 

Based on this data, the Minister of Education emphasized the importance of taking the Enem. “I say this because, sometimes, young people give up on taking the exam, thinking they’ll get a low score or that they won’t be able to get into college. With the 2024 Enem, we can also reach more than 1 million students who have access to the 842 programs offered through Sisu,” said Santana.

Applicants can apply for a free spot through Sisu, which will make its list of available spots available on Tuesday, January 14, on the Unified Portal for Access to Higher Education; registration begins on the 17th of this month.

Savings Account for Undergraduate Students

“This week (January 13–17) is very important for education. We have the signing into law of the bill that prohibits the use of cell phones in schools—a major milestone in improving the quality of learning—and the announcement of the “More Teachers” Program, which brings together various initiatives to recognize and value teachers, especially those in basic education,” Santana emphasized.

One of the highlights of the “Mais Professores” Program is the “Pé-de-Meia Licenciatura” initiative, which will cover one month’s tuition for students enrolled in university teacher-training programs. According to the Minister of Education, students who took the National High School Exam (Enem) in 2024 will already be eligible for the benefit if they choose to enroll in teacher-training programs through Sisu.
