This week, the Anísio Teixeira National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (Inep) released the document*The Enem 2024 Essay – Participant’s Guide*. The guide aims to clarify questions about the criteria that determine whether a text receives a high score on the National High School Exam (Enem).

In addition to information about the exam’s grading rubric, there are annotated examples of essays that received the maximum score (1,000 points) on the 2023 ENEM.

On November 3, the first day of the exam, participants will be required to write an argumentative essay of up to 30 lines. A problem scenario will be presented, which will serve as the basis for the essay.

Among the skills required for the ENEM are proficiency in formal written Portuguese; the ability to organize information, facts, and arguments to defend a point of view; and knowledge of the linguistic mechanisms necessary for argumentation and proposing a solution to the problem at hand.

Each evaluator will assign a score between 0 and 200 points for each of the five competencies. There will be two evaluators for each text. The participant’s final score will be the arithmetic mean of the two scores assigned by the evaluators.

Certain criteria may result in a score of zero: deviating from the topic, a text of seven lines or fewer, a passage deliberately disconnected from the topic, failure to follow the structure of an argumentative essay, and failure to treat the exam with the seriousness it deserves.

Public and private educational institutions use the Enem to select students. Test scores also serve as a criterion for eligibility for government financial aid, such as the Student Financing Fund (Fies).

Individual test scores can also be used in the admissions processes of Portuguese institutions that have agreements with Inep. These agreements ensure easier access to the scores of Brazilian students interested in pursuing higher education in Portugal.
