The Ministry of Education (MEC) released today (the 18th) the waiting list of applicants for the Student Financing Fund (FIES) for the second semester of 2023. The ministry uses this list to fill any unfilled spots at private institutions of higher education.

According to the text of the announcement setting forth the timeline and procedures for the selection process, any pre-selection of candidates on the waiting list will take place by August 29.

Candidates whose names appear on the waiting list must visit the program’s webpage at the provided URL and complete their application to secure financing within three (3) business days, starting from the day after the pre-selection. To do so, they must visit the Fies Seleção page on the Single Portal for Access to Higher Education, where candidates can also check the results of the selection process.

Inclusion of the applicant’s name on the waiting list merely ensures that the applicant is expected to be preselected for the openings for which they applied in this selection process; preselection is contingent upon the availability of openings in the applicant’s preferred group and in their chosen courses, as well as compliance with the program’s other rules.

Created in 2001 by a specific law, FIES provides financing to undergraduate students at private higher education institutions participating in the program that have received a positive evaluation from the National Higher Education Assessment System (Sinaes).
To participate in the program, applicants must have taken the National High School Exam (Enem), achieved an average score of 450 points or higher, and not have received a zero on the essay portion. The financing scale varies according to the applicant’s family income.
