With a central theme that looks toward the future, the Bett Educar 2020 Conference will highlight the most important issues facing Brazilian education. The discussions will revolve around 24 broad themes grounded in four guiding pillars: management, public policy, technology, and teacher training. The management and public policy pillars carry greater “weight” in the program schedule to address the question that serves as the starting point for the lectures delivered in six auditoriums during the four-day event: “Does today’s education prepare us for the future?”
Two panels addressing these pillars will feature experts from the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI)—the first intergovernmental body for multilateral cooperation, which has been promoting Ibero-American cooperation in its three areas of activity since 1949. A partner of Bett Educar since 2015, the OEI will address topics related to the future of early childhood education on the 12th at 2:00 p.m. and ethics and citizenship in schools on the 14th at 2:30 p.m.

Sharing values such as ethics and citizenship, promoting access to age-appropriate content, and fostering dialogue are topics that the OEI considers fundamental in its work with children and youth. The panel “Implementing Ethics and Citizenship” will seek to discuss the importance of continuously encouraging the appreciation of integrity and ethical values, thereby strengthening an education based on respect and contributing to a more participatory and better society.

In addition to Raphael Callou, director and head of the OEI office in Brazil, participants in the discussion include cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa; Wagner de Campos Rosário, Minister of the Office of the Comptroller General (CGU); Janete Lacerda de Almeida, director of Vocational Training and Social Promotion (DEPPS/SENAR); as well as Jânio Macedo, Secretary of Basic Education at the Ministry of Education (MEC), and Rossieli Soares, Secretary of State for Education in São Paulo.

In the lecture “Early Childhood Education: Future or Present?” on the 12th, Gisela Wajskop, Director-General and Head of Pedagogy at the Escola do Bairro da Educação Básica, alongside OEI consultant Carolina Velho, will discuss early childhood. Since 2019, the Organization has launched an Ibero-American network focused on children, organized around the improvement of early childhood education—an essential requirement for achieving better human development and a guarantee for educational and social development.

This issue is of great importance to the management sector. Comprehensive early childhood care must be provided in such a way that the various institutions can contribute to a coordinated effort that ensures the implementation and development of programs for children, securing the commitment of society as a whole, as well as that of the various government agencies.
