São Paulo, October 3, 2019 -- Base2Edu, a network that connects and empowers education innovators, and Bett Educar, which organizes the largest education and technology event in Latin America, invite elementary and secondary school teachers to participate in the Transformative Teacher Award, which has already attracted hundreds of candidates from public and private schools across the country. “The Transformative Teacher Award recognizes, inspires, and connects professionals from across the country, contributing to innovation in education and to the recognition of teachers who are truly transforming society through their work in the classroom,” says Prof. Alexandre Merofa, co-founder of Base2Edu. “It is important that, from an early age, everyone has opportunities to create, express themselves, and test their ideas. We believe that school is the ideal setting for these activities, and that teachers are the ideal facilitators of these experiments.”

The purpose of the award is to recognize innovative practices by teachers from across the country who aim to transform classrooms into creative environments. Applications are open to educators from public and private schools in four distinct categories:  

- Transformative Teacher in Early Childhood Education;
- Transformative Teacher in Elementary School (Grades 1–5);
- Transformative Teacher in Middle School (Grades 6–8);
- Transformative Teacher in High School.

Submitted projects must be aligned with the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC) and also recognize diversity, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Transformative Teacher Award has a Content Advisory Board composed of education experts working in companies, universities, and public agencies, such as Valesca Toledo, Undersecretary of Education for the State of São Paulo, and Marcos Garcia Neira, dean of the School of Education at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). In addition, the award benefits from the inspiring guidance of “Ambassadors” such as Prof. Jayse Ferreira, from Pernambuco, recognized as one of the world’s best teachers according to the 2019 Teacher Prize Top 50, and Prof. Lília Melo, from Pará, who was named Brazil’s best teacher in the high school category by the Ministry of Education (MEC) in 2018.

The second- and third-place winners in each category of the Transformative Teacher Award will receive 2,500 reais and the opportunity to present their initiatives at the 2020 edition of Bett Educar in São Paulo. The first-place winners in each category will receive prizes of 7,000 reais, as well as a trip to attend Bett Educar 2021 in London, England.
