The Transformative Educator Award, organized jointly by Bett Brasil, Sebrae, and the Significare Institute with the aim of recognizing projects developed by teachers from across the country who are fostering transformative education at various levels of the education system, announced on Wednesday (10) the winners of this first edition, which attracted nearly 3,000 entries. 

The results were announced during Bett Brasil 2023, Latin America’s largest education and technology event, held in São Paulo (SP) from May 9 to 12.

Category: Early Childhood Education
The winner was Prof. Joana Bertoldi, from Brusque (SC), with the project “The Development of Computational Thinking and Logical Reasoning in Early Childhood Education,” which introduced children to the world of robotics through playful activities developed as the materials for this after-school workshop arrived at the school. The project was implemented at the Doutor Carlos Moritz Elementary School.

Category: Elementary School – Early Grades
Professor Cláudia Janaína Carneiro, from Campina Grande (PB), was the winner with her project “Children’s Leadership in Implementing the 2030 Agenda – Studies on Sustainability.” The project’s main educational innovation lies in its practical and technology-based approach to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using robotics kits. Using this material, the class built prototypes of a Ferris wheel and a fan, which were powered by solar energy—a lesson in which students learned, through hands-on experience, about SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). The project was implemented at Félix Araújo Municipal School.

Category: Elementary School – Upper Grades
The winner was Prof. João Carlos Pereira Braga, from Belford Roxo (RJ), with the project “REcoin: Money from Trash.” REcoin is a currency backed by solid waste. The school community can bring in their waste and exchange it for “little money” (REcoin). With REcoin, everyone can buy various products at the REcoin Store or invest in Nature Bonds. The proceeds from the sale of solid waste are used to purchase school supplies and educational toys for the REcoin Store. Any surplus is set aside to fund project events. The project was implemented at the José Pinto Teixeira Municipal School.

Category: High School
Prof. Rafael Herdy, from Belém (PA), won the category with the project “Cargo PAVÚ: An Innovative Solution for the Smart Organization of Goods Inside Various Vehicles.” Based on a conversation between students from the Robotics Club and various professionals in the logistics and freight transport industry, the challenge was to make cargo organization procedures inside freight vehicles more efficient by using a scanner prototyped by the students themselves working together, as well as an app to indicate the smartest and most efficient way to organize the cargo, taking into account the variables of weight, volume, and delivery points of the transported goods. The project was implemented at Marechal Cordeiro de Farias State School.

Category: Vocational Education
Professor Eukennya de Araújo Barbosa, from Recife (PE), won the category with the project “Bringing Technical Education Closer to Real-World Work Experiences.” The initiative, implemented with high school students in the Technical Logistics program, provided access to training that expanded opportunities for young people starting their careers by developing new professional skills, creating synergies with the industry related to their field of study, and promoting opportunities, experience, and new perspectives in the competitive job market. The project was implemented at ETEPAM—Professor Agamemnon Magalhães State Technical School.

Category: Youth and Adult Education (EJA)
The winner was Professor Elaine Romanha, from Osasco (SP), with the project “So Many Emotions.” Strengthening bonds and promoting learning through knowledge and opportunities to express one’s own emotions were the main objectives of the project, implemented at the José Saramago Unified Educational Center (CEU). The initiative aimed to positively impact the way students care for their emotional well-being within the teaching-learning process and to develop oral and cognitive skills essential for well-being and learning.

Category: Higher Education
The winner was Prof. Antonio Carlos Mariz Junior, from Brasília (DF), with the project “Educational Podcast – Educast IESB.” The initiative involved the production (scripting, recording, and editing) of educational podcasts created by students based on their experiences in the field of education, while also promoting digital inclusion (given that technological knowledge is not always as prevalent as it should be in the training of future educators), entrepreneurship, and women’s empowerment, since the majority of undergraduate students in Education are women. The project was implemented at the Institute of Higher Education of Brasília (IESB).

In addition to the trophy and certificate, the seven winners will receive a national technical assignment and a full scholarship for the MBA program in Entrepreneurial Education (360 hours). In addition, five other full scholarships will be awarded to the institutions of each of the winners.

In all, nearly 3,000 projects were submitted to the first edition of the Transformative Educator Award. Of these, 2,662 advanced to the next phase—the preselection process to determine the 70 finalists, 14 from each region of the country—which gave the award greater national representation.

The Transformative Educator Award was created based on the synergies between two other awards that were already being presented in the field of education: the Transformative Teacher Award, sponsored by the Significare Institute and Bett Brasil; and the SEBRAE Award for Entrepreneurial Education.
