Bett Day offers a reflection on the role of school leadership in building innovative schools. The event will take place on October 5 and 6 at the Recife Event Center in Pernambuco

What role does the educational administrator play in today’s education system to shape a desirable future? This is the central question that will be addressed at the Bett Brasil Conference, a traveling edition of Latin America’s largest education and technology event, Bett Brasil. The conference, which takes place on October 5 and 6 at the Recife Event Center in Pernambuco, aims to create a space for dialogue on school management in private elementary and secondary education by highlighting that educational administrators and leaders are responsible for fostering a network of innovative schools.

Under the overarching theme “School Management and Innovation in Learning: How to Address the Challenges?”, the Bett Brasil Conference will feature a program consisting of eight panel discussions, with the participation of leading experts in the country’s education sector, with the aim of ensuring a diverse and high-quality debate.

Leticia Lyle, co-founder of Camino Education and principal of Camino School, is one of the confirmed speakers. She believes that innovative management is a “walking ambiguity” in its premises, because innovation encourages experimentation and the resulting mistakes in the search for new solutions, whereas the premise of management is that planned processes, with guaranteed results and performance, have few errors.

“Here at Camino School, we use the terminology of finite and infinite games to define this dilemma. 21st-century school leadership must balance both aspects, with clear processes, school-wide goals, personal development plans for staff, and clarity in school operations. In addition, we need to have agreed-upon forums for experimentation—and the best way to do this is by establishing strategic project management and specific metrics to determine whether they work or not. The most important thing for a school is the quality of the data used to make decisions and the speed with which those decisions are made, ”says Leticia.

Jaime Ribeiro, CEO and co-founder of Educa Por Rossandro Klinjey and also a speaker at the conference, points out that empathy is one of the essential skills that a school leader or administrator must practice when leading an innovative school. He notes that, in line with the priority skills for future professionals listed by the World Economic Forum, the ability to connect with others, understand their feelings, and act accordingly is very important for the entire school ecosystem—not just from a management perspective.

Two other competencies listed by Ribeiro are a service-oriented mindset—with the school prepared to fulfill its role in supporting the balance of the school community—and cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to observe and engage in continuous learning. “It is essential that the administrator know how to revisit concepts and practice active listening. The world is very volatile, with constant changes, and to navigate this context, the manager needs to broaden the horizons of their perception. It’s no use using the same remedy for different ailments,” says Rossandro Klinjey, CEO and co-founder of Educa Por.
