Stories have always featured figures who act as guides, parallel consciences, or invisible mentors. Virgil guiding Dante through the circles of Hell, Sancho Panza balancing Don Quixote’s idealism, Athena whispering strategy to Odysseus, Merlin advising Arthur, Gandalf steering unlikely paths, or Alfred curbing Bruce Wayne’s dehumanization are examples of characters who reinforce this structure: the protagonist faces the unknown, but is never entirely alone. There is always a supporting force, a broader perspective, a layer that organizes the chaos and provides direction.
This pattern spans eras and media, extending into the present day with Cortana supporting Master Chief, Jarvis assisting Tony Stark, the algorithmic sensitivity of *Her*, and the inner narrator of *Dune*, capable of anticipating dangers before they materialize.
Even when the technology did not yet exist, the human imagination already sensed this presence that enhances the hero. Today, this same logic is brought to life by computational agents, which are beginning to take on the role once reserved for fiction: acting as cognitive assistants that reorganize perceptions and support decisions.
The Shift in the Question: How to Engage with Systems That Think Differently
The advent of artificial intelligence and Agents makes this auxiliary presence an operational reality, transforming it from a literary metaphor into everyday infrastructure.
The challenge, then, is not to teach people how to “use AI,” but to empower them to engage with systems that do not share the same type of reasoning. We must understand the limitations, tensions, and expectations that arise when a machine provides answers without human experience, but with an expanded informational scope. Asking questions becomes a crucial skill.
By shifting the focus from the operation to the dialogue, we realize that the effectiveness of AI depends on the quality of the question and the user’s interpretive maturity. Superficial questions yield shallow answers; well-structured questions stimulate analytical thinking and deepen understanding.
This shift requires students and teachers to develop a form of critical reading that goes beyond technical expertise: it involves interpreting gaps, recognizing biases, and understanding what a system can and cannot see.
From Myth to Code: When the Assistant Voice Gets an API
The bridge between the old guiding principles and contemporary AI lies in understanding a simple concept: the API. An API functions as a formal agreement that describes how two entities should communicate.
Just as people who don’t share the same language create gestures or signals to understand one another, digital systems use APIs to establish request and response rules. If the request follows the protocol, information flows; if it doesn’t, nothing happens. This logic underpins the entire modern digital ecosystem.
It is thanks to this structure that applications communicate with one another, platforms exchange data, and Agents perform complex tasks by querying external databases. The API is not a technological mystery, but a protocol for coexistence. It transforms the old “helping voice” into computational functionality. What was once a narrative device—an external consciousness capable of broadening decision-making—now materializes as a set of integrations that expands human perception through structured and accessible information.

Human–AI Interaction as a Continuous Process of Mediation
Living with AI means accepting that answers do not arise from intuition, but from calculations, patterns, and inferences. In this context, interpreting the result becomes just as important as receiving it. The machine can synthesize contexts quickly and accurately, but it does not understand emotional implications, ethical values, or social nuances. It is up to humans to recognize what has been explicitly stated and what has only been implied. This mediation is essential for transforming information into knowledge.
As we incorporate AI into educational and professional environments, we transform interaction into a continuous flow of adjustments: the human asks, the machine responds, the human interprets, the machine reorganizes. This process requires critical attention, cognitive clarity, and the ability to distinguish between what adds value and what merely speeds things up. Fiction had already anticipated this dialogue; now it demands real responsibility. Interacting with AI depends less on commands and more on mature interpretation.

Collaborative environments and multi-voiced ecosystems
AI creates hybrid ecosystems where different forms of intelligence operate simultaneously. This requires that learning and work spaces become collaborative, integrating different tools and practices that strengthen the individual’s critical autonomy. Technology serves as a mediator of access, a facilitator of analysis, and a source of cognitive support. The notion of a hierarchy of knowledge loses ground, while the horizontal construction of knowledge gains prominence—in which educators, students, and systems interact as parts of the same ecosystem.
The Teacher as a Facilitator of Coexistence Among Different Forms of Intelligence
Given this scenario, the role of the teacher undergoes a profound transformation. The teacher ceases to be merely a conveyor of content and becomes a curator of the coexistence of different forms of intelligence. The teacher’s role is to guide students in understanding the limits, potential, and responsibilities involved in interacting with AI. It is up to the educator to teach students how to formulate questions that trigger deeper processes and how to interpret answers that do not stem from human experience.
The teacher is also responsible for ensuring that human agency is not lost amid automation. He or she establishes ethical criteria, recognizes biases, sets priorities, and determines what should be delegated and what must remain under human responsibility. In an environment where multiple voices—both human and algorithmic—are heard, the educator serves as an anchor of stability, mediating tensions and preserving the integrity of the educational process.
The supporting voice in modern culture and Agents
The narrative tradition depicts characters who help the protagonist overcome his own limitations. These guides broaden one’s vision, contextualize risks, and offer perspective. Contemporary Agents fulfill a similar role: they reorganize data, anticipate needs, connect diverse sources, and build layers of perception that were previously inaccessible. The difference lies in the medium: the voices of the past operated in the symbolic realm; today’s Agents function in technical language.This update does not change the essence of the concept. In both cases, it is an auxiliary entity that expands the human capacity to deal with complexity.
Agents do not replace the protagonist; they expand the protagonist’s cognitive scope. Just as in classic narratives, they become part of the journey, providing support so that decisions can be made with greater clarity and depth.
Final Reflection: The Mentor, the Hero, and the Multiplicity of Voices
In traditional narratives, the mentor does not resolve the hero’s journey but offers support so that the hero can figure out how to move forward. The mentor expands the hero’s horizons, guides them, and protects them without taking center stage. In the digital age, a second voice emerges: the algorithmic voice. This presence reorganizes, simulates, and contextualizes, but it does not interpret values and does not recognize emotional complexities. For this reason, it does not replace the human figure.
The educator, therefore, takes on an even more central role as an ethical and cognitive guide in this coexistence. He or she teaches students to integrate diverse voices without losing their autonomy, direction, and responsibility. Technology broadens the path, but the guidance remains human. The student remains the hero, and the teacher continues as a mentor who transforms diversity into a journey—not into dispersion.
