BETT EDUCAR: REGIONAL CONFERENCE IN CURITIBA (PR) SHOWCASED EDUCATIONAL INNOVATIONS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Bett Educar Editorial Team

Bett Educar held its final Regional Meeting of 2019 in Curitiba (PR) on October 29. The event brought together education professionals from the public and private sectors. The event featured presentations by Renato Feder, Paraná’s State Secretary of Education, and Raph Gomes, Superintendent of the Paraná Department of Education, as well as other key topics related to education, technology, and innovation.

The Curitiba Regional Meeting was the fourth event of this kind held by Bett Educar in 2019. The others took place in Recife in March, and in Brasília and Salvador, both in September.

In Curitiba, there were more than 250 registrants, 28% of whom were from public schools and 71% from private institutions. Of the total, 34% are principals, school administrators, and managers; 26% are coordinators and supervisors; and 17% are teachers.

The four Regional Meetings held in 2019 brought together more than 800 participants. On average, 78% were from private schools. Of the total, 76% were school administrators, and 95% were from K-12 institutions.

In 2020, the Regional Meetings will be held in the second half of the year. So far, events have been confirmed in Goiânia (GO) in August, Recife (PE) in September, and Belo Horizonte (MG) in October.

“Bett Educar is continually expanding its events to other cities to provide opportunities for an even greater number of educators who are constantly seeking professional development. That’s why, in addition to broad topics on education, we also address local educational issues at these events—issues that are an integral part of their daily lives,” explains Maria Alice Carraturi, director of content at Bett Educar.

Curitiba Regional Meeting

Renato Feder presented data from the Secretariat, such as the monitoring of learning progress for more than 900,000 students, assessments adapted for students with special needs, and instant grading via an app. According to Feder, this year alone the state has enrolled more than 60,000 students and has implemented measures to combat school dropout rates, provide academic tutoring, and promote social inclusion, with 30% of school spots reserved for students from families receiving Bolsa Família benefits.

The secretary also highlighted the pilot program for programming and robotics classes, implemented this year for high school students and set to be rolled out to all 2,143 state schools in Paraná by 2020. The goal is to include four hours per week of the subject during after-school hours for classes in upper elementary and high school.

Raph Gomes, Superintendent of the Department, highlighted data regarding the pedagogical use of the results of internal and external assessments, their impact and supporting evidence, and the professionalization of pedagogical management in education departments and schools as they relate to student learning outcomes.

Luciana Allan, who holds a Ph.D. in education from USP, presented the APEI50 tool, which features 50 indicators that evaluate innovative educational practices. Launched in October of last year, the platform is available in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, with more than 500 registered schools and over 6,000 teachers from schools in Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. APEI50 aims to assess the degree of pedagogical innovation and contribute to intervention strategies, including investment in digital technologies and teacher training.

Clarissa Bezerra, an anthropologist at the University of Brasília and a consultant on Innovation and Technology Applied to Education at Casa Thomas Jefferson, presented the case study “Innovation in Education,” which explored the true capacity to create and sustain cultures of thinking in learning environments, both inside and outside of school.

Francila Novaes, the content specialist for the Pleno Program, spoke about empathy and its connection to the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC), and how the topic can help enhance learning, break down stigmas, and prevent bullying and violent behavior.

Maria Rita Grandi Gullo, marketing manager at Escola da Inteligência, addressed the event on the topics of social-emotional skills for 21st-century educators and the generational clash in schools between Generation X and Generations Y and Z.

Bilingual Education

"Bilingual Education Today" and "How to Involve Non-Bilingual Teachers in Schools That Are Becoming Bilingual" were the topics presented by Selma Moura, Principal of St. Nicholas International School, and Nivio Sanches Junior, of Perto Bilíngue.

The Curitiba Regional Meeting also featured the workshop “Personalizing Project-Based Learning,” led by Celia Senna, director of Inovação, a consulting firm specializing in innovative education.

The Curitiba Regional Conference was sponsored by Escola da Inteligência, Casa Thomas Jefferson, Colégio Bilíngue Brasil Canadá, Programa Pleno, Telesapiens, and Grupo Unite, with support from Guia Escolas.
