On April 26, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) will release the study “Social and Emotional Skills: Innovative Tools for DirectAssessment .” The report will be unveiled for the first time in Brazil at the 29th edition of Bett Brasil.

Brazil participated in the study’s data collection for the first time, in partnership with the Ayrton Senna Institute. The municipality of Sobral was selected, and students between the ages of 10 and 15 participated, answering questions about how these competencies relate to factors in their home, school, and community environments. Approximately 2,500 students completed the questionnaire online. In addition to this sample, questionnaires were also administered to parents and/or guardians, as well as to teachers and principals at the schools where the study participants were selected. 

At Bett Brasil, the report will be presented during the panel discussion titled “How Can Social-Emotional Assessments Support Educational Policies?,” which will mark the national release of the study and will feature Karen Teixeira, project manager at eduLab21, the Ayrton Senna Institute’s science laboratory for education. The discussion will also feature Herbert Lima, Secretary of Education for the city of Sobral (CE), and will be moderated by journalist Antônio Gois.

“The SSE study is one of the first large-scale international studies on the topic of social-emotional learning. It aims to assess social-emotional competencies, investigate factors that promote or hinder their development, and examine the relationship between social-emotional learning and key outcomes in students’ lives, such as academic success, lower absenteeism rates, health, and well-being, among others,” says Karen.

As Karen explains, in 2023 the Ayrton Senna Institute conducted the study in the municipality of Sobral (CE), marking Brazil’s first participation as the site of the main study. “Results from a study of this magnitude make a significant contribution to raising awareness of the importance of social-emotional skills, understanding how they can benefit students’ lives in a broad sense, and guiding, based on evidence, policies aimed at their holistic development,” she concludes. 

On the same date, the OECD will also hold the global launch of the report in Sofia, Bulgaria, with the participation of Raquel Teixeira, Secretary of Education for the state of Rio Grande do Sul and a member of the eduLab21 advisory board.

This data will be essential in guiding education leaders and professionals in developing policies that promote the development of skills such as creativity, focus, determination, emotional resilience, empathy, and confidence—to prepare children and young people for today and tomorrow—and in empowering young people to become leaders and agents of social change.

The Ayrton Senna Institute as a Model for Social-Emotional Learning in Brazil

Recognized as a center for innovation in education, the Institute plays a key role in fostering discussion and conducting research on social-emotional skills in Brazil. Its work has contributed to the inclusion of these skills in the school curricula of the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC), a historic milestone for Brazilian education.

Through eduLab21, the Institute conducted a social-emotional assessment in 2021, in partnership with the São Paulo State Department of Education (SEDUC), in which 642,000 students participated.  Released in April 2022, the most striking finding of this survey was that 69% of students in the 5th and 9th grades of elementary school and the 3rd year of high school reported symptoms of depression and anxiety.
