AI tools that once seemed like a promise for the future have now given rise to a variety of services and products with simple and effective applications for the classroom

Artificial Intelligence (AI) was the trend that “dominated” the world’s most influential global education and technology event, the Bett Show UK. The event, which took place during the last week of January in London, United Kingdom, welcomed a Brazilian delegation led by Bett Brasil with more than 190 members, including educators, administrators, leaders, government officials, and executives from education-related companies.

Real-time transcription of what a person says—a teacher in the classroom, for example—was one of the features presented by companies such as Microsoft. This feature can help people with hearing or concentration difficulties, but it ends up being useful to everyone, as it provides a way to save class content to read or study at a later time.

AI systems also have the potential to help support students' mental health. Google has developed a tool that can alert teachers to potential risks associated with certain behaviors, such as self-harm and violence.

Canvas showcased an image generator—a feature that allows the program itself to create an image for use in a specific project or school assignment, if the user so desires. The generator is capable of producing illustrations of even fantastical things that do not exist in the real world.

The use of artificial intelligence also opens up new possibilities for inclusion, thanks to the OrCam device. It is a small, voice-activated device that attaches to virtually any pair of glasses and instantly reads text from books, screens, and signs. It also recognizes faces and colors. It is a product of an Israeli company, but it is also available in Brazil.

“It’s artificial intelligence serving people with visual impairments—something that transforms people’s lives. Reading a book gives you independence,” said Doron Sadka, OrCam’s representative in Brazil. And the device can also help people with dyslexia, ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), autism, and Down syndrome, Sadka explains. At Bett Brasil, which will take place in April, the company will launch a device specifically designed for people who do not have visual impairments but need assistance with reading.

The Brazilian delegation had a busy schedule in London, including visits to educational institutions and participation in the Bett Show UK. For Adriana Martinelli, content director at Bett Brasil, the week exceeded expectations. “This initiative strengthened personal relationships, fostered deep reflection, established meaningful connections, inspired innovative ideas, and, above all, spurred the development of new projects and partnerships,” she said. According to Adriana, the group’s dedication to these activities contributes to building a quality education system in Brazil.

Claudia Valério, executive director of Bett Brasil, noted that the event’s expansion reflects the importance of the topic in the country. “We wrapped up with very positive results and a lot of praise. The increase in activities was proportional to the increase in attendance. The growing interest in participating shows that people are attuned to the topic and eager to gain more knowledge and engage with innovations,” she said.

On the first day of the event, the director general of Bett Brasil participated in the session “Bridging the New Frontier: Latin America in the Global EdTech Spotlight, which discussed the current state of the Latin American education market for a global audience. Also on the panel were Lars Janér, CEO and founder of Learnbase, and Fernando Valenzuela, CEO of the Edlatam Alliance.

Claudia said she was pleased with the response from the audience that attended the event. “Judging by the quality of the questions, we could tell that the participants were very knowledgeable,” she said. “I noticed that investors are very concerned about risk in Latin America, which is sometimes higher than in Europe and the United States, due to currency fluctuations. These are concerns common to any business, but it is possible to deal with these challenges,” she assured.

Claudia believes that the presence at the Bett Show was important for showing the world that the Latin American education market is thriving and has grown significantly. “At Bett Brasil, every year we welcome new international exhibitors—generally edtech companies looking to launch their businesses there. And we have successful examples of companies that have ended up establishing themselves here. We’re very happy to see the progress these companies have made and to have served as a gateway into the country,” she said.
