A Bett Northeast Conference is back for its traveling edition in Olinda (PE), which began this Wednesday (27) at the Pernambuco Convention Center. The event, sponsored by Bett Brasil—the organizer of the largest Innovation and Technology for Education event in Latin America—features the main theme “Focus on Basic Education: Transformative Dialogues.” 

The opening ceremony was attended by officials, educators, and leaders in the field. “We need to look at education as a whole, but basic education is essential to our students’ development. The goal here at the Bett Nordeste Conference is to engage in dialogue to bring about change,” emphasized Adriana Martinelli, Director of Content at Bett Brasil.

She also spoke about the event’s format, which features auditoriums in various formats, such as the “Aquarium,” where the audience can actively participate on stage; the “Roundtable Discussion,” moderated by journalists specializing in education and health; and the auditorium for “Inspirational Talks.” “Bett Brasil aims to reach every region of the country, as it believes in dialogue to help improve the quality of Brazilian education, while also fostering coordination across the entire educational system and among all stakeholders in the sector.”

Tárcia Regina da Silva, Executive Secretary for Educational Development at the Pernambuco Department of Education and Sports, highlighted the importance of listening in the educational process. “Basic education is one of the major challenges facing the Pernambuco state government. We are developing collaborative strategies that include infrastructure, pedagogical processes to assist municipalities, and the issue of age-appropriate literacy. Just as important is expanding our engagement with teachers in the state’s 1,056 schools. We are creating strategies for dialogue, emphasizing the need to listen in order to understand what works, what doesn’t, what is good, and what isn’t,” said Tárcia.

The secretary added: “Dialogue is not about imposing one’s views. It must be guided by what the other person says. And we need to educate ourselves in dialogue and active listening, which can be challenging when done at the institutional level. In this regard, another challenge is to understand and listen from a perspective of diversity—and therefore to also listen to indigenous, quilombola, and rural communities.” 

Also present at the opening, José Ricardo Diniz, president of the Union of Educational Institutions of Pernambuco (SINEPE-PE), addressed the discussion surrounding educational transformations. “To discuss education—and especially basic education—we need to understand that those who bring about change do not do so alone. It must be a comprehensive transformation; it requires a broad perspective. The pandemic has brought about change; it has had a profound impact on literacy, and we are now seeing the repercussions. Thus, innovation, technological advancement, and curricular flexibility are essential to this process of transformation we are experiencing,” emphasized Diniz.

Finally, the opening panel also welcomed Domingos Sávio Alcântara Machado, president of the Tiradentes Innovation Center, who highlighted the importance of the Bett Nordeste Conference, which brings essential topics related to basic education into the discussion.

It’s also important to highlight the digital transformation, but to recognize that ‘digital’ isn’t just about technology in a world where many people lack access to connectivity and technological resources.
