The organizers of the Transformative Teacher Award—a joint initiative by Bett Educar, Instituto Significare, and Base2edu aimed at recognizing the leadership of teachers who promote transformative education—announce that they are accepting submissions for projects implemented at any time, regardless of the school year in which they were carried out, provided they were implemented in a public or private elementary or middle school. Submissions for the Award are now open and can be made free of charge at: significare.org.br/premio.

The decision to extend the deadline for implementing the projects takes into account the challenges that educators across the country are facing during this unusual 2020 school year. The pandemic has forced changes in the ways we teach and learn, while also highlighting the inequalities that educators face throughout Brazil.

“If a teacher’s job was already more demanding than the global average for many professions—with lower earnings compared to other professionals—just imagine how it is today, when work has invaded their homes, pushed the boundaries of working hours, and taken over a large part of our teachers’ lives,” notes Prof. Wellington Cruz, president of the Significare Institute. “In this context, awards such as the Transformative Teacher Award represent much more than a celebration; they are tools of resistance and the struggle for education,” he adds.

With this change, projects developed by teachers in years prior to 2020 may also be submitted for the Award, as they serve as a source of inspiration for educators across the country. More awards

The second edition of the Transformative Teacher Award will recognize not only the educators selected as winners, but also all those who reach the qualifying round of the award. These teachers will receive the 2021 Transformative Teacher Certificate and the Transformative Teacher Digital Seal, as well as the opportunity to nominate a leader from their school to receive the Transformative Leadership Certificate.

The awards will be presented to the 350 teachers whose projects qualify for review in the final stages of the competition. These educators will also have their projects added to the Significare Institute’s Best Practices Database, a platform dedicated to sharing educational practices that can inspire teachers across the country in their daily work. By accessing the Practice Bank, teachers can become part of an active community of educators who believe in education that transforms.

About the Award

The 2021 Transformative Teacher Award covers the four levels of basic education: Early Childhood Education, Elementary School (Grades 1–5), Middle School (Grades 6–9), and High School. To participate, interested educators must have implemented the project(s) at a public or private school by the registration deadline. It is also important that the submitted projects have focused on developing students’ skills, in accordance with the BNCC (National Common Core Curriculum).

The second- and third-place winners in each category will receive, in addition to a trophy, a prize of 2,500 reais and will present their projects at Bett Educar 2021. The creators of the first-place projects in each category will receive a cash prize of 7,000 reais, a trophy, and a special invitation to participate as guests at Bett Educar 2021.
