The first day of the traveling edition of the Bett Nordeste Conference, which began today (Sept. 27) in Olinda (PE), featured ten panel discussions, bringing together teachers, educators, and experts to discuss the central theme “Focus on Basic Education: Transformative Dialogues.” The event, which continues tomorrow (Sept. 28) at the Pernambuco Convention Center, is sponsored by Bett Brasil, the organizer of the largest event on Innovation and Technology for Education in Latin America.

The Bett Nordeste Conference kicked off discussions on Basic Education and the need for transformation in education and learning. According to Adriana Martinelli, Director of Content at Bett Brasil, all of the event’s debates and dialogues focused on Brazilian education as a whole, but especially on Basic Education, which is essential for students’ development. “The goal here at the Bett Nordeste Conference is to engage in dialogue to bring about change, to help improve the quality of Brazilian education, while also fostering coordination across the entire educational system and with all stakeholders in this sector.”

At the event’s opening, Tárcia Regina da Silva, Executive Secretary for Educational Development at the Pernambuco Department of Education and Sports, highlighted the importance of listening in the educational process. “Basic education is one of the major challenges facing the Pernambuco government. We are developing collaborative strategies that include infrastructure, pedagogical processes to assist municipalities, and the issue of age-appropriate literacy. Just as important is expanding our dialogue with teachers in the state’s 1,056 schools. We are creating strategies for dialogue, emphasizing the need to listen in order to understand what works, what doesn’t, what is good, and what isn’t,” said Tárcia, who added: “Dialogue is not about imposing one’s views. It must be guided by what the other person says. And we need to educate ourselves in dialogue and active listening, which is challenging when done at the institutional level. In this regard, another challenge is to understand and listen from a perspective of diversity, which is why we must also listen to indigenous, quilombola, and rural communities.”

Also present at the opening, José Ricardo Diniz, president of the Union of Educational Institutions of Pernambuco (SINEPE-PE), addressed the discussion surrounding educational transformations. “To discuss education—and especially basic education—we need to understand that those who drive change do not do so alone. It must be a comprehensive transformation; it requires a broad scope. The pandemic has brought about change, significantly impacting literacy, and we are now seeing the repercussions. Thus, innovation, technological advancement, and curricular flexibility are essential to this process of transformation we are experiencing,” emphasized Diniz.

Finally, the opening panel also welcomed Domingos Sávio Alcântara Machado, president of the Tiradentes Innovation Center, who highlighted the importance of the Bett Nordeste Conference, which brings essential topics for basic education into the discussion. “It’s an excellent opportunity to discuss this topic and gain insight into the experiences, challenges, and concerns that these educators face on a daily basis. It’s also important to highlight the digital transformation, but to recognize that ‘digital’ isn’t just about technology in a world where many lack access to connectivity and technological resources. That’s why schools need to transform themselves to keep pace as students, teachers, and parents navigate this period of rapid change in education,” said Machado.

Debates on Education

In the afternoon, one of the panels presented at the Bett Nordestes Conference was “Innovative Strategies and Practices for Meaningful Learning,” featuring Karina Nones Tomelin, founder of EducaBox, and André Kraucher, Customer Loyalty Coordinator at International School Education. The panel was moderated by Mirella Araújo, a reporter for Jornal do Commercio (PE).

Tomelin highlighted the issue of teachers who teach in the classroom on autopilot—an aspect inherent to the teaching profession itself. “Reflecting on active teaching methodologies requires teachers to make small changes in the classroom that will have an impact on their daily routines; this is part of the innovation process. In other words, they must move away from delivering a lesson that is essentially rote and instead think of strategies for making changes—even small ones—to their daily routine. What’s most interesting is that the panel fulfilled its purpose by offering these tools to teachers, who want to apply these active teaching methodologies in their schools as early as the very next day.”

Moderated by Murillo Campos, Content Coordinator at Bett Brasil, and featuring experts Karina Nones Tomelin (EducaBox) and Carol Stancati, Director of Skies Learning, the session titled “How to Create a Culture of Lifelong Learning, Prioritizing Personal Development as a Pillar of Improving Teaching Practice?” provided an overview of learning for life. “There’s a tendency for teachers to go on autopilot because they’re demotivated—a result and reflection of the post-pandemic period, with their emotional well-being shaken. So, the discussion centers on how to support teachers and the school community as a whole. Another important takeaway from this panel was recognizing the need for everyone to maintain a curious outlook that extends far beyond the school community,” said Stancati of Skies Learning.

During the panel discussion “Paths to a New Journey: Lifelong Learning,” Mekler Nunes, National Director of Amco Brasil, challenged the audience with a topic that matters to everyone—whether students, administrators, or teachers. “We addressed some key pillars, such as decision-making, interdisciplinarity, viewing people as having potential without limiting their learning, and the challenge to foster effective lifelong learning: ‘When was the last time you learned something new?’”

The Bett Nordeste Conference also featured two inspirational talks: one on “The Teacher and Internal Dialogues: The Power of Self-Love in Teaching,” with Educa co-founder and ambassador Rossandro Klinjey, and “How to Connect Ideas and Initiatives to Promote Autonomy?,” with Davi Braga, investor and founder of RealDeal Ventures (business ecosystem).
