More than 12,000 online prep courses function solely as content repositories, failing to provide an infrastructure that ensures knowledge retention. Disengagement and rapid forgetting are direct consequences of the lack of data-driven systems that precisely determine what and when each student should review. To address this bottleneck, ClassBuild introduces a personalized learning architecture based on spaced repetition, which delivers a 12.6% improvement in learning efficiency compared to traditional methods. Furthermore, by integrating a question bank, practice tests, gamification, and flashcards, ClassBuild redefines the preparation process, replacing passive study with strategic, high-impact performance management.

Today, more than 12,000 online prep courses in Brazil operate as content platforms rather than learning systems. Students start out motivated, but quickly lose interest, forget what they’ve studied, and end up failing their exams. The core problem isn’t the availability of content, but the lack of a data-driven learning infrastructure that continuously determines what each student should study and exactly when.

The challenge is to implement a solution that enables data-driven learning, objectively determining which topics the student needs to study and review, and how often the student will be exposed to those topics. 

The solution we developed was based on a study of the effect of spaced review on memorization and learning, which demonstrated that strategically spacing out review sessions enhances the formation of long-term memory, increasing learning efficiency by 12.6% compared to conventional methods. When scheduling reviews, the student’s performance on a set of questions about the subject is taken into account. Depending on the score obtained, reviews will be spaced further apart or occur more frequently, leading to optimized study.

In addition to adaptive scheduling, the platform integrates gamification, quizzes and practice tests, flashcards, and a detailed learning analytics dashboard, creating a unified environment where engagement, assessment, and performance tracking work together within a single data-driven learning infrastructure.

 

Question Bank

Unlike conventional online courses, an online test prep course requires students to solve many practice questions on the subject matter to reinforce the material.

The ClassBuild Question Bank contains nearly 1 million pre-registered questions, and teachers can add their own questions to adapt it to various market niches.

The question bank is integrated with the lessons, practice tests, and schedule module and offers the following features:

  • Organization by areas of knowledge, disciplines, and subjects,

  • Use of filters such as Exam Board, Year, Difficulty, Test, Administering Agency, and Class,

  • Resolution history,

  • Complete statistics by subject and topic,

  • Inclusion of formatted text, images, mathematical formulas, and videos in both the question stem and the answer choices,

  • A list of tips and solutions with the teacher's comments.

 

Smart Schedule

To mitigate the disengagement and rapid loss of retention observed on static content platforms, Classbuild implements a study session scheduling system based on the Difficulty-Halflife-P(recall) (DHP) model. Unlike traditional approaches that ignore the impact of intervals on memory strength, the DHP model uses Markov properties to transform a student’s performance history into a time series of predictive data. This architecture, originally built based on the analysis of 220 million behavioral logs, enables our infrastructure to identify each student’s memory “half-life” and dynamically adjust the difficulty of the material. The optimization of the learning journey is achieved through the Ye, Su, and Cao (2022) algorithm. 

The learning journey is optimized using the Stochastic-Shortest-Path-Minimize-Memorization-Cost (SSP-MMC) algorithm. By treating the scheduling of review sessions as a stochastic shortest-path problem over infinite time, the system seeks to minimize the total memorization cost required for the student to achieve the desired long-term retention. Experimental results indicate that this methodology provides a 12.6% improvement (Ye, Su, and Cao, 2022, p. 9) in learning efficiency compared to state-of-the-art algorithms. The integration of this mechanism, which has already been validated on a large scale in the MaiMemo application, ensures that Classbuild delivers data-driven personalization capable of drastically reducing exam failure rates.

 

Practice Tests

To perform well on tests and exams, students need to continually assess their understanding of various subjects and then focus on the areas where they have the most difficulty.

There's no better way to assess what you've learned than to take a practice test under the same conditions as the actual exam—with a time limit, a set number of questions, and the same grading criteria as the real test.

The practice test module in ClassBuild was implemented to allow users to simulate a real test and offers the following features:

  • Creating practice tests with a set date, a deadline for completion, and a time limit,

  • Ability to assign different weights to questions,

  • Various grading criteria to simulate exams from different testing boards, including the Enem’s IRT (Item Response Theory), 

  • Statistical data for students showing the percentage of correct answers by subject and topic,

  • Statistical data for teachers, including class data and question statistics, which helps identify the areas where students have the most difficulty,

  • Possibility of canceling questions and re-grading the exams.

 

Gamification

The problem isn't a lack of content or a lack of effort on the students' part. What holds online learning back the most today is something much simpler and harder to solve: engagement.

Students start out motivated, but they quickly lose their momentum. Classes become repetitive, studying turns into a chore, and the sense of progress disappears. When they don't see any improvement, they give up.

This is exactly where Classbuild's gamification comes in.

For each activity completed, the student:

  • Earn experience points (XP) and level up,

  • Earn coins,

  • Obtains patents,

  • Compete for a spot in the rankings.

This provides students with immediate rewards that activate the dopamine system, creating a cycle of continuous motivation.

The ranking fosters healthy competition and keeps the class active. And with weekly and monthly ranking cycles, there’s always an opportunity for new students to stand out.

Studying is no longer a chore; it becomes a dynamic process. Students continue not because they have to, but because they want to improve.

 

FlashCards

Flashcards complement the learning process by promoting active memorization through the spaced repetition algorithm, techniques proven to be effective for long-term content retention, as shown in the Timeline.

The FlashCards module offers the following features:

  • Folder structure with multiple hierarchical levels for organizing decks,

  • Lists of decks related to courses and topics for performance evaluations,

  • Students also have the option to add their own flashcards.
