A former Apple scientist, Ohmaye will deliver an inspiring talk on “The Paradox of AI in Education: Why Technology Is Both the Problem and the Solution” on May 11 at 5:00 p.m. in the Bett Brasil Congress auditorium.

In the interview below, the expert discusses the main points he will cover during his panel discussion, providing context for how the technology is used in education and society in general. Check it out!

Bett Blog - When you use the term "context" in the title of your presentation, what exactly are you referring to?

Enio Ohmaye - I am referring to the individual, social, and environmental conditions that impact the results achieved by someone who embarks on a process of learning or behavioral change. For example, someone who wants to learn Chinese but finds themselves in an environment where the language is rarely spoken or lacks access to appropriate learning materials. Individual factors, such as cognitive abilities and level of motivation, can also significantly affect the learning of a new language. 

In addition, social factors—such as the availability of mentors or peers with whom the learner can practice the language—also play an important role. Finally, environmental factors—such as local rules or the quality of the learning environment—can affect the learner’s performance.

Bett Blog - Technology has always been viewed as a threat to educators. With the advent of artificial intelligence, is this perception confirmed?

Enio Ohmaye - In terms of infrastructure—electricity, drinking water, and sanitation, as well as computers, the internet, social media, and cell phones—these technologies have brought about significant transformations in the material, physical, psychological, social, and cognitive spheres. Teachers have always viewed these resources as threats due to their potential to “revolutionize” education—a phenomenon that also occurred with media such as radio, television, and CD-ROMs. These new platforms have certainly brought about changes in teaching, but for those who knew how to adapt, none of them became a threat; rather, they became an opportunity. Artificial intelligence differs from these transformations in that it affects all domains (material, physical, emotional, mental, and even spiritual). From this perspective, I believe that the disruption in education will be more drastic; however, we must view it as an opportunity.

Bett Blog - What would be a “spoiler” from your talk at Bett Brasil that might draw an educator into the auditorium?

Enio Ohmaye - In the first part, I will discuss why technology cannot be viewed as the solution. In the second part, I will demonstrate how technology can be considered a solution.
