In recent years, Pernambuco has made numerous strides in public policy in the area of education and continues to achieve results that have garnered national attention. In the 2023 Basic Education Development Index (IDEB), released by the Anísio Teixeira National Institute for Educational Research (Inep) and the Ministry of Education (MEC), the state exceeded the national average in high school. The data show that Pernambuco scored 4.5, while the national average was 4.3.

Another highlight for the state is the universal access to full-time high school education. According to data from INEP’s 2023 School Census, 66.8% of schools in the state system are full-time; this percentage is above the national average of 21.9% and exceeds the National Education Plan’s target of 25%.

It is no coincidence that the city of Recife was chosen to host the Bett Nordeste Conference, a traveling event organized by Bett Brasil, in in partnership with the Union of Educational Institutions in the State of Pernambuco (Sinepe-PE), on September 4 and 5, at the Recife Expo Center.

The Bett Conference invites participants to reflect on the challenges, trends, and prospects for basic education —both public and private—in the Northeast and throughout Brazil. The event will bring together municipal secretaries of education, leaders, school operators, administrators, teachers, and experts from the education sector.

The event is supported by renowned educational organizations, such as the National Council of State Education Secretaries (Consed), the National Union of Municipal Education Directors (Undime), the National Association of Catholic Education in Brazil (ANEC), the Union of Educational Institutions in the State of Paraíba (Sinepe-PB), and Sebrae.

The opening ceremony will take place on September 4 at 10 a.m. and will be attended by Recife’s Secretary of Education, Fred Amancio; the president of Undime-PE, Andreika Asseker Amarante; and the president of the Private Schools Union (Sinepe/PE), José Ricardo Diniz.

“The Bett Nordeste Conference will be an opportunity to delve deeply into topics that are part of the national and local landscape for improving education. Reflecting on artificial intelligence, social-emotional skills, inclusion, and other issues that directly impact the quality of education is the path toward an educational system that meets the needs for human development and professional training,” says Andreika Asseker Amarante, president of Undime-PE.

Andreika believes the event will be important for educators to exchange experiences and gain access to the latest developments in educational solutions, which can contribute to the training of teachers, technical staff, and municipal education officials in guiding the planning of public education policies. “Undime-PE supports high-quality events such as the Bett Nordeste Conference and works to represent, train, and advocate for free, high-quality public education in collaboration with the state’s municipalities,” he notes.

Programming for Public Spaces

The Bett Nordeste Conference will feature a series of panel discussions centered on the theme: “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) in Education: What Should We Learn?” Key issues in the sector—such as digital ethics, personalized learning, emotions, and inclusive leadership—will be discussed by more than 50 speakers across three auditoriums.

Among the sessions focused on public education, the following stand out: “Innovating to Transform: Innovation in Education in Recife,” on September 4 at 4:00 p.m., featuring Marcelo Dantas, general manager of Innovation at the Recife Department of Education.

On the same day, at 3:00 p.m., there will be a panel discussion titled “Practical Experiences with AI in Education”, featuring Paulo Alexandre Filho, a teacher in the Pernambuco state public school system; Cesar França, a professor at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE); and Karla Vidal, founder of ProfLab, a program offering creative training for teachers in Recife.

On September 5, at 2:15 p.m., there will be a debate titled "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Gamification on Educational Transformation in the Municipality of Domingos Mourão (Piauí)", featuring Érica Graziela Benicio, the municipal director of education for Domingos Mourão, Piauí; and Bernard Caffé, CEO of Jovens Gênios.

Among other confirmed speakers are: Pierre Lucena, CEO of Porto Digital; Rossandro Klinjey, psychologist and writer; Luciano Meira, professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE); Paula Leão, director of Escola Vila Aprendiz; Patrycia Alves, Innovation Manager at the University of Pernambuco (UPE); Léo Chaves, founder of the Hortense Institute; Carla Tieppo, neuroscientist; and Gil Giardelli, writer and professor.
