To what extent do Brazilian schools address issues related to sustainable development and recognize the importance of education for achieving the UN’s 2030 Agenda? Are teachers familiar with the SDGs and do they implement projects and activities related to sustainability in schools? These are some of the questions that the “Sustainability in Brazilian Schools” survey, launched by the Significare Institute, aims to answer.

The survey is aimed at teachers and school administrators in both public and private schools. By completing the questionnaire, participants will receive a free copy of the final report containing the results and best practices identified by the survey. The online questionnaire is available here.

The survey arose from the need to expand knowledge about the presence of SDG-related topics in Brazilian education and to identify educational initiatives and schools aligned with sustainability that are, in some way, contributing to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda—a global plan to achieve a better world for everyone by 2030.

Based on studies of the practices of teachers enrolled in the Transformative Educator Award—an initiative of the Significare Institute, Bett Brasil, and Sebrae—it was found that topics related to sustainability are widely present in projects ranging from early childhood education to higher education.

The SDGs are a set of 17 global goals established by the UN to be achieved by 2030, with the aim of building a better world for everyone and one that is developed in a more sustainable way. The Goals—also known as the “2030 Agenda”—address needs such as: ending poverty and hunger, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and action on climate change, among others.

The purpose of this study, in addition to identifying schools that implement initiatives aligned with sustainability, is to understand how the SDGs are integrated into the curriculum and daily classroom activities in a practical way. “The questionnaire responses will provide us with a broad overview of how the discussion on sustainable development is part of the teaching-and-learning process in Brazil, allowing us to understand: to what extent teachers and schools are aligned with the topic and the educational initiatives aimed at the SDGs,” comments Prof. Wellington Cruz, president of the Significare Institute.
